So you thought walking was the best prescription for going fit. Well, there is an element of risk involved as it does not suit everyone, especially when the black topped road is your walking track.

Experts say there is a chance of inviting pain by continuously walking on the tar roads. As a beginner, one needs to prepare the mind and body to achieve desirable result, but most fail to pay attention to this aspect. Their enthusiasm begins to wane once they start feeling the pain after long walks. It promptly made sense to a soul like me who is never able to sustain any fitness regime for more than a month.

Fitness expert B. Rajinikanth cleared my doubts. “People can claim that they do warm ups before the start of any drill. But warm up for a short duration is not sufficient. It may be appear appropriate for a fit person but for a beginner, dedicated simple free hand exercises, called calisthenics, are necessary to tune up mind and tone up muscles,” he convinces me.

With renewed interest I seek the new set of routines. “These are simple indoor drills easy to follow. Once into it, there is no room for excuses but to start doing it regularly. There is no fixed time either for doing it. Just 30 minutes daily whenever you are free is enough to fetch visible results,” he says.

So I take to calisthenics with vigour, after a light stretching, session. I lift both my hands in front, up, back and lateral and follow the same with my legs. Then I lift my body by raising the heel and stay on the half squat position for a count of 10.

After this set, I shift to floor exercises, lying down and lifting my leg front, back and lateral.

“Floor exercises are really good for abdomen as the pressure is immense on stomach area when leg is lifted. Beginners need to start with static position and then move on to dynamic, which is doing these drills with movements. It comes as you increase the speed of repetitions,” he explains.

Climbing stairs is also a part of this drill. “Though it looks tedious, it is actually fun doing it. Just thrice a day, go up and down the stairs maintaining a steady speed and this will help in the long run. Leg muscles get strengthened,” Mr.Rajnikanth continues with his brief.

For the last round, I get a stretching tube. “They are of variable size and are available in the market. With the tube you spread your hands to strengthen the chest muscle,” he advises.

I have returned impressed because I am no longer required to search for a suitable venue and time to do these exercises. Only, if I am serious, I can move on to the next set of exercises after two months, my coach has promised me. And I have promised to return.
